Opioid Misuse Prevention & Treatment

Opioid misuse and overuse are serious and widespread issues in North Carolina, and they have increased significantly over the last several decades. In the last 20 years, more than 16,500 North Carolinians lost their lives to unintentional opioid overdose. COVID-19 and the associated pandemic control measures exacerbated the opioid overdose risk with a 28% increase in opioid overdose deaths and a 24% increase in opioid overdose related emergency department (ED) visits.

Through the Opioid Misuse and Prevention Plan, Vaya Health aims to return our communities to the downward trajectory achieved pre-pandemic. In alignment with the NC Opioid Action Plan (OAP), Vaya is committed to reducing this human tragedy within our communities. Vaya understands that both medical and non-medical drivers of health impact a person’s likelihood to misuse opioids and is committed to addressing opioid misuse through whole-person care.

The Opioid Misuse Prevention and Treatment Program is one of two pharmacy programs Vaya administers, and it complements the Drug Utilization Review program.
