Empowering North Carolina’s TBI Community: Vaya Health Highlights Commitment to Care During Brain Injury Awareness Month

March marks Brain Injury Awareness Month, a time to recognize the millions of individuals living with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and the important role that comprehensive care plays in their daily lives. Vaya Health is deeply committed to serving North Carolina’s TBI community by providing essential services that empower individuals on their journey toward independence.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 2% of North Carolinians have been affected by a TBI, making the need for specialized support in this area of health care even more critical. Due to the complexity and uniqueness of every case, the importance of a tailored approach to care remains critical and at the forefront of Vaya’s mission.

Vaya’s support for this population includes the work of Vaya CEO Tracy Hayes, who was recently appointed to North Carolina’s Brain Injury Advisory Council, a group dedicated to supporting TBI-related policy initiatives across the state. The council plays a critical role in improving services for individuals with brain injuries by promoting research and sharing recommendations with the governor, General Assembly, and NCDHHS secretary regarding the planning, development, funding, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide service delivery system to address the needs of brain-injury survivors.

Individuals affected by TBIs require a unique type of care, rehabilitation and assistance throughout their recovery journey.  Vaya Health offers a range of behavioral health services and resources tailored to meet the needs of these patients and walk alongside them in their care. Through partnerships with health care providers, rehabilitation specialists, and community organizations, Vaya ensures that individuals and families have access to:

  • Care Coordination – Personalized support to navigate health care services, treatment options, and community-based resources
  • Behavioral Health Services – Access to mental health counseling and crisis services tailored for individuals with TBI.
  • Independent Living Programs – Services that help individuals regain independence, improve daily functioning, and enhance quality of life.
  • Community-Based Support Networks – Connections to peer support groups, vocational rehabilitation, and family education programs.

By encouraging individuals, caregivers, and health care professionals to utilize available resources and advocate for a future where every person affected by TBI receives the care and support they deserve, Vaya Health remains dedicated to breaking down barriers and expanding opportunities for North Carolina’s TBI community.
